Royals Should Consider Bonds

Tuesday, November 6, 2007

The Kansas City Royals biggest need is a guy with power. They have twenty-five million dollars to spend and will look for both a hitter and a pitcher, which is not out of the question with their budget. Although Bonds wants to go to a contender, the only logical teams in the AL are not contenders. The Yankees are not interested, the Angels are not interested, so he may be out of luck. One thing is for certain though, he wants 3,000 hits and would probably settle for a one year deal with a team to accomplish that feat. For one year, Bonds would probably cost 12-15 million dollars. That still gives them plenty of money to get a pitcher while giving them thousands of more fans who want to see Barry Bonds on their new jumbo screen. Bonds would work nicely in their DH spot, and could mentor young players Alex Gordon, Tony Pena, and outfielder Mark Teahen. They could move Billy Butler to first base and put Bonds, who batted .276 with 28 HR and 66 RBI, at DH. Playing DH would also increase his numbers. I think the Royals would love to have the first player to ever reach 800 homeruns on their team. Other than Barry Bonds, expect the Royals to inquire about Geoff Jenkins, Cliff Floyd, and maybe Tony Clark.

Funny how everybody condemned the Giants for employing a "guy like Bonds" especially the last couple of years but now that the Giants cut ties with him, it's a "good idea" for a team like the Royals, Angels, et al to sign Bonds to fill a power void. What gives?

I feel I can speak for many Royals fans here in KC: WE DO NOT WANT BARRY BONDS! He is a clubhouse cancer, and that is the last thing a team in rebuilding mode needs.

Patrick - I hear you. I just think it's humorous for pundits to now suggest it's such a good idea for this team and that to pick up Bonds when all I read last year was "how could the Giants even think about bringing this guy back with all the baggage he has and what he represents." Kind of hypocritical on their part I think.

Bonds does not mentor young players. He wants nothing to do with anyone else. He only cares about numero uno and nothing else.

I made an arguement earlier in the year on a few sites that the Royals should go after Andruw Jones. AJ certainly had a down year but I don't think I'd look to Bonds if I wanted to make a splash in the FA pool. I still think it makes sense but I haven't heard any site so much as mention it as a possibility. I guesss with Gathright now, they don't have room? I'd trade DeJesus and push Gathright to left I think. /me shrugs

Bonds would never want to play in such a small market city, but it would be a great deal for Royals if they could do it. Bringing in a guy like Bonds would certainly fill up Kauffman Field more and show the fans that the organization is making an effort to compete in the tough AL Central. It would be good for baseball if it actually happened

If I am the Royals I make this happen. This organization is one of the worst in all of sports the last 30 years. Bonds gets fans in the seats, nationally televised games, even if it is just one or two its better than none. Bonds will be the first star to play there since George Brett.

In the past 30 years? LOL Me thinks not. In the past 10 years yes, but the Royals were one of the prominant teams 20-30 years ago. Ask any Yankme fans, they know.
